Dear ArcBlock Community Developers,

We launched our Developer Contest in October with the aim of inspiring creativity and rewarding your efforts to help the platform grow.

Firstly, we would like to extend our sincere gratitude for your active participation and the enthusiasm you have shown so far. 🙌 Secondly, we are making a change to the content.

What's changing?#

As the contest neared its end date, our reviews show that many submissions were ported from other platforms and lacked the quality we expected. While these blocklets hold some usability, their long-term contribution to ArcBlock's platform and ecosystem is limited.

After discussing this internally and incorporating the community's feedback through voting, we will place increased emphasis on quality over quantity.

Everyone agrees that the focus for ArcBlock needs to be on long-term sustainability. Because of this, we have made the following decisions:

  • Revise the contest's evaluation standard to favor high-quality applications with long-term value
  • Extend the contest’s deadline until December 31, 2024 to ensure developers have enough time for thoughtful research, development, and submission of high-quality applications.
  • Increase the competition reward pool from 5000 ABT to 7500 ABT to express our gratitude for your commitment and efforts. 💰📈

The new review guidelines?#

Here are our updated evaluation guidelines:

  1. Utility (Mandatory): Blocklets needs to be based on real-world use cases, effectively solving user needs.
  2. User Experience (Mandatory): Blocklets should be aesthetically pleasing and interactive with optional multi-language support. Blocklets that are not fully developed will be rejected.
  3. Copyright Protection (Mandatory): Originality is critical, and blocklets must not duplicate other blocklets within our store. Credit must be given to original sources if building on existing open-source project(s). Explicit copying from other platforms or stores will be rejected.
  4. ArcBlock Infrastructure (Recommended): Blocklets built on ArcBlock infrastructure are always encouraged.
    • Employing the Blocklet Service for application management, the Blocklet UI for a standard user interface, and DID Spaces for data storage.
    • Utilization of underlying protocols such as NFT, Token, Verifiable Credentials, DID Connect, and Staking is also encouraged.
  5. Composability (Recommended): Our platform thrives on the ability to compose; composition will create a multiplier effect.
  6. Decentralization (Recommended):
    • A necessity for independent deployment, i.e., the generation of valuable user-related data.
    • User privacy protection through non-collection and non-monetization of user data.
    • Your blocklets should not rely on external services.
  7. Promotion-friendly (Recommended): Your blocklets should be easy to use and support user issues. A live demo, support site, or dedicated developer site is preferred.
  8. Build in public (Recommended): Open-source blocklets enjoy longevity and user trust.

Based on these guidelines, we will begin re-evaluating current blocklets accordingly. Those not in alignment with these new guidelines may be rejected or delisted.

We will also craft a developer getting started page for different build paths on ArcBlock platform, just like the following one:

We believe these modifications will further motivate the creation of exceptional applications, contributing to strengthening and expanding the ArcBlock ecosystem. Thank you for your ongoing support, and we can't wait to see what you create next!

Developer support?#

Understanding the financial costs and operational demands of blocklet development, we have established a Developer Support Plan with both short-term and long-term incentives:

Short-Term Incentives:

  1. Developer Contest Awards: For every round of our contest, we will award prizes based on blocklet ratings.
  2. Developer Build Cost Subsidy: To help you present your work and blocklets more effectively, if you host your personal developer site with ArcBlock Launcher, we will subsidize your operating expenses on a quarterly basis.

Long-Term Incentives:

  1. Revenue Sharing with ArcBlock Launcher: We will grant a share of the revenue generated from the actual downloads of your blocklet(s) through ArcBlock Launcher.
  2. Annual and Quarterly Best Blocklet Badges: To recognize the blocklets that resonate most with our community, we will award NFT badges to 'Best Blocklet' winners, based on user reviews. These badges will be displayed on store.blocklet.dev and on your developer homepage.

We believe this support plan will significantly boost developers to continue producing high-quality blocklets while sustaining their innovation efforts within the ArcBlock ecosystem.
